Lenny orders a subscription to the Mercury News.

The San Jose Mercury News just sent a bill Lenny for subscribing to their newspaper! This would be less surprising if Lenny was actually a real person rather than just a disembodied, barely coherent set of voice snippets on my answering machine setup. There’s really not more smarts to it than that; everytime there’s a pause from the caller, the next snippet plays, all the way to the rickroll.

Here’s the bill they sent him: lenny.san_jose_mercury_news_subscription_billing_statement.d20150624.scan.page1.redacted

And here’s the phone call in which their rep, ‘Tatiana’, decides that Lenny has apparently agreed to order a subscription to the newspaper. Shame on you, San Jose Mercury News, for pressuring your reps so hard to get sales that Tatiana was willing to sign up a set of random voice snippets for a newspaper subscription, despite Lenny already claiming to have a subscription! audio_recording

I’ve contacted the company and they say they’ve canceled the subscription. I’m betting that Lenny is now on their mailing list though, and I’m further guessing that they’ll be reselling his contact info to other organizations. We’ll see how much correspondence Lenny has to handle in the future.
